Alessandro Bismuto was born in Naples, Italy in 1989. He carried out both BSc. and MSc. at the University of Naples Federico II working under the guidance Prof. Ruffo in the field of homogeneous catalysis. In particular he worked on new chiral ligands derived from glucose and their application in asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes. In 2014 he started his PhD student on the CRITICAT CDT Ph.D. program (Doctoral Training in Critical Resource Catalysis). After 6 months of training in St Andrews he went to Edinburgh where, under the supervision of Dr. S. P. Thomas and Dr. M. J. Cowley, he began to work on “Transition-metal Free Catalysts for Hydrofunctionalisation”. He likes playing football, volleyball, tennis and he enjoys every kind of sport. He also likes cooking and playing guitar.

Philip was born and raised in a rural area in southern Germany. He finished his undergraduate studies in chemistry in 2016 at the Technical University of Munich under the supervision of Prof. Tiefenbacher where he worked on tandem reactions with supramolecular catalysts. Afterwards, he started his graduate studies at the same university and now, he joined the Hartwig group at UC Berkeley to pursue his Master's degree. Besides chemistry, he likes doing all kinds of sports, especially sport shooting, going out with friends and reading.
